Week 9

So after falling off track with my blog and other college work in general I decided to get on track.
In the first lecture of the week we talked about video compression. I found this lecture very interesting. We discussed that videos were really just a sequence of photos that create a moving image.

In the second class we discussed podcasts. Podcasts are recorded shows from a radio station or other media and are available to listen to on a mobile device. I personally never subscribed to a podcast but they seem to be very popular. I might just have to give it a go sometime!

In the labs we worked on our assignments.

Week 3 class

In class we looked at Patents, Trademarks and Trade Secrets.

Patents are a way of protecting an inventors idea. Inventors disclose the properties and information abut the product to the government and in turn recieve public disclosure. Patents normally last for 20 years, after those 20 years companies are allowed to make the same invention, drug, etc. for cheaper.

A Trademark is a slogan, logo, etc that the company usesto sell its brand. examples of these include the Nike swoosh, the golden arches of Mc Donald's. Trademarks are in effect for as long as the company uses them.

Trade Secrets include ingredients, formulaes and techniques that a company uses to keep their product the best on the market. An example of this is Coca-Cola and their secret ingredient. I'm not too sure about the nubers but it;s like only 3 or 4 people in the world know the ingredient for this

Personally I think that Trademarks, Trade Secrets and Patents are key to any business these days so they can fight their own corner in the money making world.

We also had to discuss the music industry and how some artists copied other work.

The example  I am going to discuss is
'Clothes Off' by Gym Class Heros.

The original of this song is by Jermaine Stewart.

Gym Class Heroes added their own twist to this song so if I was the judge in this courtcase I would not find them guilty for copying the original version.

Here are the two songs of choice.

Week 1 and 2

In the first week of Web Publishing we discussed about setting up our blogs. We discussed how to manage the blogs and what ways to obtain the most marks from our posts. Colin stated that  bad grammar and spelling will lose you marks

In the second week we discussed about privacy on the web and how we feel about it. Personally i don't posting on the web as it would be no different to what i would say in person. Wealso discussed copyright issues a bit.
